5 Places to Locate High Quality Extracts for Guided Reading

A question that seems to pop up a lot with regards to Reading lessons is: Where do you locate high quality extracts for guided reading?

In this post, I’ll list 5 places in which I go to to source high quality extracts for guided reading, to ensure I cover a range of genres, while challenging the children slightly at the same time.

  • 1) Class/School/Public Library- I put this one at the top of the list because it is the most accessible to all of us. Often, you’ll have fabulous books sitting in your school that would be perfect to engage with in a Guided Reading session. As I focus on using an extract a week, I’ll choose a chapter from a book and photocopy it so that there is a copy between every two children. To ensure I have chosen a quality text, I usually refer to The School Reading List and select the age group I have to help with my choice of text. I have grouped quality recommended reads from all of you together on my Amazon account. Click here to have a look.

  • 2) ReadingZoneThis is a fantastic resource in itself. Not only is there many different extracts to engage with, there’s   reviews on the books/extracts also. I’ve attached the link to the exact page where you can download the extracts. It works perfectly with Whole Class Guided Reading, as you can dabble in a wide range of texts, across different genres each week.

  • 3) World Book Day/Extracts – Another great place to download quality resources with absolute ease! I’ve linked to the extracts section of this site, where you’ll find a wide range across all age groups! Do check it out.
