About

Museum of Islamic Art Doha

Welcome to Rebecca the Irish Teacher- a blog that supports, advises and encourages teachers!

My name is Rebecca and I’m a full-time, primary school teacher in Ireland. I trained and taught in the U.K, as well as that, I’ve taught for three years in Doha, Qatar.

I’m also a blogger, creator of teaching resources and maker of classroom decorations but more of that later.

From Profession to Hobby

Back in 2015 I desperately wanted to move abroad to teach. I used to spend hours trawling the internet in search for blogs of teachers, who had moved to the Middle East to teach. I found very little online and the majority of posts I found, where by recruitment agencies who were selling the “rose-tinted” version of teaching abroad.

Within 2 years of living in Qatar, I started my blog – a personal blog where I aimed to share as much about teaching and living in Qatar as I could. I’ve learned so much about blogging since then, and have since moved back to Ireland. I have documented the whole process on the blog of returning to Ireland to teach, as similarly to above, I struggled to find honest answers online about returning to teach in Ireland.

My blog now is a space for teachers to find information re:

  • Teaching Abroad: how to secure a job/lifestyle/home truths.
  • Returning to teach in Ireland: crucial paperwork/the Teaching Council/securing a job.
  • Whole Class Guided Reading: structure/differentiation/resources/how it develops critical thinking skills.

As my blog has grown in popularity, I have started to focus more on the Whole Class Guided Reading posts. I am hugely passionate about this strategy and believe that when taught well, allows for the development of critical thinking skills that can apply to all lessons. My posts are filled with ideas, links and resources to help you employ Whole Class Guided Reading in your classroom.

Why Rebecca The Irish Teacher?

This site is dedicated to supporting other teachers in many ways of the profession. I truly believe that learning from other teachers is the best form of Professional Development. I’ll hold my hands up and say, I could benefit hugely from reading another blog with regards to other subjects, but with English, it’s my “area”!

I became English coordinator in 2018 and my passion grew only more from there.

Since then I’ve added numerous articles, links and tips to my site, along with video tutorials (on my Facebook account). In 2017 I also began sharing my resources (both free and paid), so that other teachers could benefit from resources they had seen me use.
